Digital Wellbeing is an interactive learning experience I created using Articulate Storyline as part of my Professional Diploma in Digital Learning with the Digital Learning Institute. Designed for FE and HE students and staff, the course explores digital wellbeing and the attention economy, encouraging learners to reflect on their own digital habits and develop strategies to better manage their wellbeing in an increasingly connected world. The course interface and navigation intentionally mimic a typical smartphone experience, reinforcing the subject matter through design, while Lumi (a gentle orb guide) supports learners throughout the journey by offering guidance, insight, and timely wellbeing reminders.
⚒️ Tool: Articulate Storyline
💻 Roles: End-to-end design and development, including instructional design, content creation, interaction and UX design, visual design, and overall project management.
This walkthrough presents the Digital Wellbeing course prototype as experienced by a learner. The video showcases core interactions, smartphone-inspired navigation, and the role of Lumi in guiding learners and offering wellbeing prompts. As a prototype, the focus is on validating functionality, user flow, and design intent rather than delivering a finalised course.
Through the course, learners explore how digital habits affect their focus and wellbeing, discover practical strategies to manage distractions, and practice balancing their online and offline activities. They are encouraged to develop a personal digital wellbeing plan and reflect on the benefits and challenges of taking intentional breaks from technology.
To ensure the course was learner-centred and effective, I applied a systematic instructional design approach, guided by the ADDIE model. Analysis of learners’ needs, digital habits, and wellbeing challenges informed both the structure and interactions of the course, ensuring it would engage and support diverse FE and HE students and staff.
These personas guided key design decisions, including:
Navigation simplicity and smartphone-style interface
Tone and clarity of content
Level of guidance and support offered by Lumi
Analysis: Reviewed learner needs, digital wellbeing research, and attention economy principles.
Design: Planned course flow, interactions, and prototype layout.
Development: Built the prototype in Articulate Storyline, creating interactive elements, Lumi guidance, and essential graphics.
Implementation: Created a functional prototype for assignment testing, ensuring navigation and interactions were intuitive.
Evaluation: Tested key functionality and learner experience; reflected on design effectiveness and areas for future enhancement.
Lumi is the interactive orb guide embedded throughout the Digital Wellbeing course. Serving as a friendly, supportive presence, Lumi offers guidance, hints, and wellbeing reminders as learners navigate the course. As a playful design element, Lumi is also hidden as an “easter egg” in the circular button on the bottom navigation bar: when learners click, Lumi appears with a positive message related to digital wellbeing, encouraging reflection and reinforcing key concepts. This interaction not only adds engagement but also strengthens the learner’s connection to the content, creating moments of delight while supporting self-awareness and wellbeing.
The course interface replicates a smartphone experience, featuring a bottom navigation bar and intuitive touch interactions. This familiar layout allows learners to explore the content naturally while connecting the design to the digital wellbeing theme. Key features, including Lumi, are seamlessly integrated into the interface, providing guidance, encouragement, and reflection prompts. By mirroring a device learners use every day, the navigation supports engagement, autonomy, and focus, helping learners interact with the course comfortably and meaningfully.
Learners can create their own digital detox plans directly within the course using interactive prompts and variables in Articulate Storyline. Lumi guides learners through the process, asking targeted questions to capture their goals, habits, and strategies. These responses are compiled into a personalised plan that learners can review, save, and refer back to, supporting reflection and practical application of digital wellbeing strategies. This feature encourages autonomy, reinforces learning, and provides a tangible takeaway that connects course content to real-life habits.
Creating Digital Wellbeing allowed me to explore designing for reflection, interactivity, and learner engagement under assignment constraints. Working within limited resources and free trials challenged me to prioritise key features, balance content with interaction, and make intentional design decisions. I’m particularly proud of Lumi, the smartphone-style navigation, and the personalised digital detox plan, which provided learners with guided, meaningful takeaways. This project has helped me reflect on my design practice and identify areas for improvement that I can carry forward into future instructional design projects.
